Fascinating stuff. I have a feeling a comment is being made on past and present but can't put my finger on it. On the surface the message seems to be look how much better off with a new Davis sewing machine but I feel rather than think there is something deeper. Perhaps I'll look at this card months or years from now and see something different.

I think maybe the artist has the drawings reversed. In reality, the “before” scene could have been an affluent lady that just bought a new Davis sewing machine on the payment plan. Soon the payments got to be more than she could handle, and even though she sold off most of her home furnishings, the Agent came and repossessed her Davis machine, leaving her as shown in the “after” scene in poverty, dressed poorly, and sewing for hire by candle light to barely put food on the table.
Oh, if she had only bought a Singer instead.....but now she can only dream of what could have been....

My card has been corrupted. Argh!!! Anyways the next image is much lighter in content as I was starting to get a headach from the first one:
PS---I wasn't sure what a "cog" was so I looked it up
"a tooth on the rim of a wheel or gear"
