I agree with the wall hanging idea. Quilt it and hang bells from the lower edge. I think it would look better on a wall. Otherwise keep the panel in one corner of the quilt instead of putting it in the center...maybe with pp Christmas trees for the rest of the quilt.

I'd leave it alone and add a lime green border. I'm sure a young child even a teen would love getting it. Would bring a smile to them while fighting a illness.

I think making this into a Christmas quilt and gifting it with one of the books that go along with the panel would be nice.Maybe use beige and the green on the vest maybe even olive green,creams and /or black? In the eyes of a child or a person who remembers the books by Ms. Barker this will be wonderful.

I would:
trim off the outer red border
replace it with a vivid batik of mixed greens
border it with narrower strip of black
bind it in red/black/gold/green plaid

Sorry if this has been previously posted, but it's 12 AM and my eyes are starting to cross..lol But, how about cutting it into squares and doing a Window Pane design? I'm not a big designer, but it just seems like it might work. Just an idea..

Actually, I like the bright colors. Do the trimming of the red as other have said. A child will love it.

OK, this is not my cup of tea, but I don't find it awful. And I have a friend who would adore it. I would use the first border, trim the red since it doesn't go across the bottom and use greens in the panel, as a border to soften it a bit. It's a Christmas panel, enjoy the vibrance

Don't be afraid of big bold colors for children. They like them just as much as we do. I agree with trimming off the red on the right and left sides but then use black and a softer green or pickup all of the colors in a round robin type of sashing using more than one of the colors in the panel. Have fun these little wee fairies. They may win your heart.
