Default Blooms, Bugs, and Butterflys...

This is a WH I made out of upholstery fabric. I started it in 2010 at the NC Quilt Symposium in a class by Pat Sloan. I finished it last year. I'm slow at finishing things. That was the first time I had taken a class and needless to say, I didn't know quilter's used cotton fabrics. There I was in class with my suitcase with all the fabrics I owned, upholstery leftovers! No cottons! Ms. Sloan was a doll helping me the best she could. Some of the people in the class weren't very nice and laughed at me. I was embarrassed to say the least but stayed the entire time and did the best I could to try to piece the background together. I had a dear room mate I met there who stayed up til 1 AM helping me cut the blocks the correct size to finish the background. When I came home, I put it aside. Last year I took it out and knew I want to use the beautiful upholstery fabric with the bugs, blooms, and butterflies, stems and leaves on it, as appliques to finish it. I cut them all by hand and machine appliqued them on the backing. I quilted it on my DSM just following the patterns of the materials. I framed it in black like a picture frame. I like it but it is very unusual for most people...
Anyway, here it is... Thanks for looking.

It sounds like there were a lot of not very nice people gathered in one spot at that class. Look at all the art quilts we have today; you were just ahead of everyone there. It is beautiful and I love the way you quilted it.

Nice job! It puts me in mind of many of the crazy quilts done with silks, velvets and embroidery.

I think it's beautiful and so modern looking. Those that laughed were just rude in my opinion. You certainly got the last laugh on this my friend!

Beautiful, beautiful! The thing I love the most about this board is "no mean girls allowed." Only quilters who love quilting and enjoy seeing the creativity of other talented quilters who are willing to try new techniques. Your project is wonderful and I especially enjoy the close ups of the quilting. It's beautiful, beautiful! I can't wait to see what your next projects will be.
