My go to machine is my Brother PQ1500. It only does straight stitch, but it has needle down and scissors built in to cut. I use it all the time for piecing and quilting. It is inexpensive too as far as sewing machine prices go.

You really have to go down and test drive the sewing machine that the dealer your daughter used. If you haven't opened it, you might get full value. Open boxes are just like cars used for demo driving. Find out what DSM works best for you.

I have 2 Brother project runways and they are really nice machines...mine have been workhorses but looking to go higher up very soon. I don't have problems with the throat size becuase we own a mid arm and my wife does all my quilting...I make the tops...she quilts them

I had a Brother CE8080PRW that I bought for about $150 at Target for my DIL. I liked it so much that I bought one to bring to classes since it's pretty lightweight. It does FMQ just fine, is easy to use and so dependable.

I have a brother 6000 that i bought from walmart about 8 yrs. Ago and has been a good extra machine but has a problem right now and i can't seem to figure it out. It bunches up on the bottom. Have cleaned it, changed threads, needle, tension don't know what to do next......gave up and back to my babylock again.....any suggestions? I love the little light weight machine. Have done lots of quilting on it even queen size quilts.

And yet another vote for this machine, I love it. And a very reasonable price too. I paid 599 at Amazon last year.

I have the Brother Innovis NX650Q which has a nice large harp space, and zillions of stitches (I can even program my own stitches) it was easy to learn and I have no desire to own any other.
