Need help please. I want to get a laptop to use with my sewing/embroidery machine. Just don't know what is best to get. What would you recommend?

If you aren't doing important business on a laptop then just buy which ever one is on sale. I would not buy Windows 8, the new windows 10 is coming and does away with all the junk Windows 8 has. If you don't mind wading through Windows 8 you can find some great deals this holiday season. Seems every store will be trying to get rid of them.

Just going to use this one for sewing only.. Not familiar with window 8. Do you think window 10 will be better?

I just bought a HP that has windows 8.1 which was on sale for $299 at Walmart. I can do anything that the more expensive ones can do, just doesn't have as much memory and whatever else. But that is okay since it does what I want for my sewing/embroidery. I did take a class on how Windows 8.1 works and it was very helpful. Glad I took the class.

Windows 8 is okay if you can get a class for it. Check out Best Buy; they have become pretty good about offering free classes that you just need to sign up for. I hated Windows 8 until I learned a few tricks for using it. Such as (1) how to get to the desktop and (2) that in the tiles window all you need to do is type what you are looking for anywhere in the window and it will find it for you.

Have you worked on a computer before? If not, you really need to be able to take a class for whatever laptop you get (or have someone who ***really*** likes you show you how to do things).

Make sure that the one you choose has a cd/dvd slot. A lot of them are being sold without one

Make a list of what you want in the laptop, watch the ads, if you see a good price, ask if it does what you want (without additional upgrades!). Then go for price. With the holidays coming, scout out what you want then wait for the sales!!!!

Between DH & I we've bought probably 10 laptops in the last 3 years - we use them for everything in our house. One of them does nothing but use its camera to watch our front porch, LOL. Our favorite brand for laptops is Acer. I've also been happy with HP, Dell and Lenovo laptops. I do NOT like Gateway. My main 2 laptops that I use the most are both Acer and I'm very happy with them both.

We also both work in IT, and we both hate Windows 8. Personally I will not buy a Win 8 machine; you can still get Windows 7 pretty easily and it's going to be compatible with most software. We have 2 win 8 machines in our house and they do NOT play nice with the rest of the network. Fortunately they're for DH's work so they're his nightmare, not mine!

If you're using it primarily for your embroidery machine, you will not need a fancy processor, so that will save you a lot of money. If you want a CD drive, make sure you're looking at "laptops", not "netbooks". Netbooks are much smaller and weaker and normally do not have CD drives. I have a netbook and I don't like it - it's so weak it can't even stream Pandora properly!

Try newegg.com - they have a pretty good selection and their buyers tend to leave good reviews. I purchased a refurb machine from them in the past and had no problems with it; did a quick search and if you're willing to buy refurb, it looks like you can get a pretty good machine for right around $150. If not, I see a couple Acer laptops with Windows 7 running around $325-350.

I would certainly go around to stores doing your research at Best Buys and Walmart. Then hit the store the day after Thanksgiving when the buys are the best. There may be some sales before so just keep you eyes scanning the sales.
