Babies or anyone else gets chilled when laying around. A cover always feels better.

I would not toss all your plans but make a lightweight summer quilt. I agree babies always need quilts. They can use it for her to lie on if nothing else. You can always make another, heavier, one when she is three--and old enough to love having her own quilt!-- and they move back to cold weather country.

My son asked for a quilt that would work on the floor for his daughter when they worked in Hong Kong. It is warm there also but he wanted a quilt.

They are so nice for lying on the floor and starting to crawl. Maybe a not-so-fancy one four utilitarian duty.

They certainly don't need a quilt where the average temp is 40+C. I know they will live in air conditioned quarters but I no longer think a quilt is appropriate. I'm thinking of waiting till they return and their daughter will be almost 3?
I lived in Saudi Arabia for ten years. We slept with a blanket most nights because it was so cool in our house. Powerful air conditioning. I think a quilt would still be a very welcome gift!

Baby quilts are definitely used here in the south. They're used as play/nap mats as well as covering in air conditioning. I use a poly batting (punched traditional poly) which is good for any situation.

Definitely go ahead with your original idea. Everyone loves a handmade quilt for their baby and babies do need to be kept warm, and as someone else pointed out, the baby will need a quilt for a playpad when on the floor.

I feel 'naked' watching tv without being bundled up in any type of blanket or quilt -winter or summer. I have light quilts with no batting, quilts with one layer of batting, quilts with 2 layers, and quilts with thick wool batting. I know I am not alone in the comfort of cuddling up with a quilt any season of the year. Baby quilts are always welcome--most parents/grandparents I know have put a blanket or quilt down on the floor for the baby to lay, sit, or crawl on. I would go ahead with your original plans.

knowing you quilt your nephew will be very upset if his favourite Aunt fails to make his child a quilt. He will think of you everytime he uses the quilt on his child.
