    I like kzimmer's idea -- very masculine. Either fleece on the back or flannel, to keep the back side soft. If he doesn't like it, you are not out a lot of money, but I bet he (and/or his friends when they come over) will like it. Even if it gets used by the dog, or for moving furniture, he will remember who made it for him. Sometimes these things become valuable to the owner later. I would do it.

    Hi, if you want this as a way of bonding maybe think of a time you were close and make a quilt that represents that time. Maybe memory with pictures, or things you enjoyed together. I often enclose a letter with my quilts about why the fabric, pattern were selected, and why I chose to make this special quilt for them. Let your heart lead you.

    You really should make a quilt for him. Use what colors he likes, or browns. If you can find fabric related to something he does, be it motorcycles or hunting or wine, try and use it in some way. Even if he hides it away or lets the dog use it, it will have some meaning to him. At least you know you tried to strengthen your bond to him.
