When I took home ec in 7th grade when dinosaurs roamed the earth---they taught us to sew over pins. I did that for years as a garment sewer and never had a problem. This was long before computers were part of a sewing machine.

When I became a quilter and read all about how to make them---I began removing the pins unless the intersection was tough to sew. Then I would stitch very slow.

My wife and I both remove pins as we go - usually when the pin is under the foot but before its under the needle. It's a small inconvenience vs several large risks. Just not worth the risk to me.

I was taught to remove pins before sewing over them. Sometimes I pin to the left of the presser foot so I don't have to take them out while I'm sewing. Hitting a pin scares me and I hate to replace broken needles.

I remove the pin b4 I get to it, about 2-3 inches b4. otherwise, you run over it and it breaks and ends up in the machine, that could be real money.

I repair sewing machines. Hitting pins when you sew over them can ruin the timing on the machine and then you'll need to pay someone to repair it. I repair machines very frequently that the timing is off because of hitting pins. So, if you want to be paying others good money that you can otherwise keep for yourself keep on doing it:>

If you have a computerized machine you really don't want to sew over pins. If you hit one you have a good chance of throwing off your timing (which is not cheap) and all of the other hazards.

And for me too! Though I'm not good enough yet for the most part to accidentally run over one, though I have had it happen a few times. Plus, I haven't had to change a needle and don't know how to do it yet which is another reason I want to avoid broken ones!

After hitting a few and bending my pins and breaking a needle or two I always take mine out as I get to them.

I try to stop just before getting to the pin. I'm not as careful if the pinhead is away from the foot, leaving only the pinpoint. But I have sewed over about umpty zillion pins without injury to anything except an occasional broken needle, so it is not a big issue with my machines. froggyintexas
