The "arm" is the piece that goes across the top. Basically it's L shaped and also attaches to the base. Looking for the serial number would involve taking the machine apart.

Shelley, there are only two places where the serial# is located on your machine. The early machines, 33-35 had a boss located inside the bottom of the machine, under the drip pan. To my knowledge only the early 33's used that spot to stamp the serial#, however the boss was still present on later 33, 34, and some 35 machines until they changed the casting somewhat. Here are a couple examples of the different castings with the third one being a 1941.
The very early 33's only had the serial inside the bottom area and did not even have a boss for the serial on the bottom outside area. The drip pan had to be removed to see the serial.

rarmao - thanks for the pictures - that is really neat to learn about the casting differences.

I think we have reached a point where we will not discover the answer to this. I am not willing to take it apart and the drip pan yields no number so I think we will just approximate the age as circa 1948. It seems to be a good running little machine and I think we will enjoy many years of sewing. Thanks to all who responded, I have learned quite a bit about the Featherweight.

Maybe you can pick a date around then that's significant to you or your family, and use that as her "birthdate"!

What year is yours? I am thinking around 1948?
