I just deal with the raveling. Doesn't bother me at all.

It doesn't work for me either. I zig zag the raw edges before I wash my fabrics. It works and no strings!

I know I tried it but can't remember the results...........probably like what happened to you. These days I don't bother washing till the quilt if completely finished. As I also sew clothes and sometimes clothing fabric shreds I've gone to cutting out the patterns with a pinking blade in my rotary cutter. Works like a champ. I have a pair of pinking shears but haven't used them in years since finding the pinking rotary blade. Think I got my last one at Nancy's Notion.

I wash on the gentle cycle; no raveling, no tangles, and, most importantly, no time wasting prep. On the rare occasion that there are a few loose edge threads after washing, I clip them before putting the fabric in the dryer and everything comes out neat and smooth. I can tell pre-washed fabric by the slightly fuzzy cut edges and the softer hand.

I've had it work fairly well for me, but each fabric is different and if there are threads left, I just cut them off before I iron the fabric. Sorry it didn't work for you.

I trim when I remove it from the washer - never have a problem with more fraying in the drier, and then the frayed strings don't cause problems with the fabric drying knotted up.

And I prewash everything - even scraps bought from others, and often have quite a tangled mess coming out of the wash.

Some fabric really frays, and some does not - I don't give it a thought.

I also put a large cotton towel (dry) in the dryer, and find that helps a lot with wrinkles.

Why would either snipping a corner or cutting a square out of the corner eliminate ravelling? Guess I don't get it. The threads at the end of the cut are coming off--that is what is causing the ravelling. Is the square cut out supposed to stop that from happening. Why?

Anyway...just snip off the threads when you take it out of the washer/dryer. It doesn't seem like a big deal to me. One swipe of the rotary cutter and they're gone.

The easiest way to prevent fraying and the thread mess is to take an old rotary cutter and put a pinking blade on it. Use this rotary cutter when cutting your fabric to pre-wash...the edges will be pinked...no thread mess.
