    oh a question just pop up in my head, is it always necessary to do a FMQ on project ? what happens if you skip this step on blanket for example?

    No, you don't have to do fmq, but you must do something to keep the three layers together( top, batt, back)..... You can do stitch in the ditch(seams between pieces) SID, or just diagonal lines across body or tie with yarns at regular intervals. Check at stores and look at bed covering that are mass produced and you can see what I mean. Also, go to your library and take out some books on quilting, or YouTube will give you tons of information.....a start of the journey.....
