This happens to me ALL THE TIME. I put my 16" crosshatching quilting stencils somewhere to flatten them out and NOW I can't find them. I did buy a little notebook to start writing where I store things.

I keep scrap paper from the printer by my computer. When I see something of interest I write it down and then mark it off the list after I've checked it out and saved it or printed it out. I no longer rely on just my memory!!

When I see a pattern that I like I save a photo of it. That way I can always go to my photos for ideas. I do it both on my iPad and laptop.
If if its a tutorial that I like, I save it as a PDF, because I have found that years later, links don't work. Just go to file, print, and at the bottom click on print as PDF, then go back and click "save as pdf ". This is on a Mac, not sure if windows has the same capability.
Hope this helps.

Just a thought, if you were on a desktop computer you might check your "surfing" history?
