Check a sporting goods store like Bass Pro Shops. A friend gets the plastic bags used by fly fishermen to store their flies and little bitty things. These have zipper closures on top and reinforced holes ( pre-punched) on the bottom. There are several sizes available. She keeps hers in three-ring notebooks for convenience.

I once used zip lock bags and sewed them to the center of a quilted placemat, then folded it over and tied it closed with ribbon. Cute idea but it didn't hold up for very long. Now I use the pouches with a zipper for a three ring binder and I made a pretty cover for the binder. Much more durable and just as pretty, not to mention handy.

I have some basic sewing supplies in a zippered pencil pouch with three grommets. It's so convenient to see the contents at a glance. Grab and Go supplies..... I use the same approach to having supplies available in my knitting totes. For storage of both my double pointed needles and cabled needles, the separate pouches for each size and type are secured with shower curtain rings. My collection is more extensive so there are three separate groupings. It works like a charm for me. ;-)

I have an organizer that I bought at a quilt guild show that is made with regular ziploc bags. I am careful what I put in it - I usually use it for embroidery threads for a project and only put scissors in that have a point protector. I have had 3 of these for several years and so far no problems with the bags tearing.

This has been my experience as well.

I have the little bags that you can buy for embroidery floss that I store bobbins and thread spools in -- they have a punched hole and I put them on a ring. They aren't very big, but I think they are bigger than the baggies for fishing flies. I make my own vinyl pouches -- JA has the vinyl very inexpensive (especially on sale) and I use my stash to make the pouches.
