I've never done a pieced backing. I have 1 & 2 yd cuts of several fabrics that match the quilt top. The top is a Turning Twenty.
If you have suggestions I would appreciate it.

Try googling "pieced quilt backs" I like doing strips of alternating fabrics. Here are a couple that I did [ATTACH=CONFIG]544697[/ATTACH][ATTACH=CONFIG]544698[/ATTACH]

I try for as few seams as possible and try not to have the seams line up with the quilt top seams. If I am FMQing, double seams will sometimes cause a skipped stitch.

When piecing a back, it's generally best to press the seams open rather than to the side.

I agree with Tartan. I usually just insert another fabric or design but keeping it simple.

I just do it in thirds or halves. This one matched just fine with the front.

As a long arm quilter I am starting to see more and more pieced backs. Horizontal seams are better than vertical as vertical seams are rolled up on our roller and create bulk which makes it a little more time consuming to get a smooth even back. Half inch seam allowances with a slightly smaller stitch length and pressed open produce the best results. Hope this helps.

I spent several of my earlier years in quilting during a time when "back art" was a big deal -- there was even a book by that name; so I frequently still do a bit more piecing on the backs than many people do.

As you can see I was about 5" short on enough backing. Since I was planning on quilting with straight lines, I just cut my one piece into 4 & added the stripes & the 4 square patch.
