Quilting is a hobby and also one that can cost money for the basic notions and fabric. I purchased most of my supplies at JAF (Jo-Ann Fabric) when they were on sale. First thing to do is try to get sewing a 1/4" seam consistently on your machine. Many post here on suggesting how to accomplish that. You might also check your TV guide doing a search of "quilting" There are many shows such a Quilt in a Day and Love of Quilting. It will give you a view of the basics of quilting.

Welcome from Ontario, Canada. Try a table runner from the YouTube tutorials done by Jenny Doan from the Missouri Star Quilt co. to get the basics of piecing. Cotton fabrics are used mostly in quilting as they are easier to work with. Baby clothes are a harder to use due to their varied fabric content

Welcome from Arizona. I agree with everyone else--sign up for a beginners quilting class at your local quilt store if that is possible. They will help you with the basic tools you will need and I wish you luck on your new adventure. I must tell you quilting is addicting with great results. I was hooked after my first class.

Most respondents have assumed you are going to cut up the clothes to make patchwork which would be traditional quilting. However, I have seen a trend where people are taking the entire outfit and sewing it down to a base fabric. This is another option you can consider. this blog I just found has pictures on doing both kinds

If you google quilt using whole baby clothes and select images you will get lots of inspiration. this may be an option you want to consider.

You can do this with just a needle, thread, scissors and a tape measure or ruler of some sort.

Welcome from SC Texas. Happy you joined us. As a long time sewer and quilter I would advise you to practice on something else before starting on your baby clothes that can not be replaced if you make a mistake. When I am using a new pattern even now I make a practice block before I cut my good fabrics. I have found mistakes in the pattern several times and saved myself from messing up my fabrics.
