Omigosh came to my mind, too. I also thought of that Farmer's Wife quilt (and book), but I don't know if there's applique on that one. If you don't want to do applique, then a Dear Jane quilt is not the one for you. Have you made a Storm At Sea quilt yet?

Double wedding ring, Bargello are good ideas. Also cathedrel window and labryth in 9 blocks can be a challenge. It is difficult to give ideas when we don't know what you have already done.

I would refer you to Pauline Ineson's book "How to Create an Heirloom Quilt" In this book you can learn over 35 different machine techniques to build up a beautiful quilt. It took me almost six months to finish the quilt, but it was so rewarding to see the finished result and it also got many compliments from my fellow quilters.
