Welcome birdsong from Canada.. Sewing a straight line? How long have I been sewing? Still not happening.. I've purchased a number of tools, pencil, 1/4 masking tapes nothing could work for me.. Then, tried my hand at paper piecing, Bingo! it worked, then the Xblock ruler worked for me, and the large flying geese rulers by Eleanor burns. With sewing clothes I work lots with knits so it's stretchy.. and seams get trimmed away.. Nobody knows my faux pas.. Don't compare yourself to others, everyone is at it's own speed/lvl.. Some have equipment that helps because can afford more.. Keep in mind plenty of you tube, books, guilds to learn from and be happy to have such a hobby/skill/art to enjoy and you will quickly find the joy in being surrounded by other seamstress/quilting.
