I'm another non-purist and use whatever I happen to have on hand. Much of my thread is older, dual duty C&C as well but I have some Gutterman and some others. Whatever is handy and close to the color I want. I use primarily my computerized Viking and occasionally my FW to piece. Neither object to whatever thread I throw at them.

I use 60wt Presencia cotton. It was recommended by a quilting instructor. I love how easy it is to get my seam allowance right when using this thin thread. I have 2 colors, a taupey-beige and white.

I'm a Sulky gal, I love the shine. But then I don't make "heirloom quilts". Mine are for using and enjoying, not saving.

I use Guttermann, Presencia 60 wt, or Masterpiece.

I have so much thread from estate sales still in the original package. I use most of that for hexies and other piecing.

I've started using some of the polyester threads that I bought when I was sewing knits back in the 70s.

My machine only refuses to work with C&C Dual Duty - anything else goes. Most of the time I use Connecting Threads but I have other threads as well - whatever is on sale.

I go by thread wt and ply more then brand. I like thin thread with no lint. I use Connecting Threads Poly, Superior Bottom Line and Sew Fine, and Aurifil the most. I have some of all brands though. I buy a spool of thread from each thread vendor at shows or quilt shops I visit.

I also use Guttermann both for piecing and for quilting. I use grey for piecing (most of the time) and usually the off-white (ecru) for quilting. And, I always use a JoAnn Fabric coupon.

My fave is Aurifil 50wt. It is fine thread, so the bobbin holds more of it, and I get very accurate seams with it. It is very lint-free compared to other cotton threads I have tried. I believe Prescencia 60wt is even better (still thin and lint-free but 3-ply rather than Aurifil's 2-ply so probably stronger), but I have not tried it yet.

I used Mettler silk-finish thread for years, but once I tried Aurifil I didn't want to use the Mettler anymore.

I feel silly asking this question, but where on the thread does it show the wt?
