I, too, remember them being given out for free. Oh how I wish for one now! I have a 4 ft. one that is warped. Not a good tool when making SIL's drapes! Oh, for a straight yard stick!

You can still get them free at some county fairs. We watch for people carrying them as we walk in and make a beeline for that booth!

I have a collection of the wooden ones in an assortment of colors and I have only one that is metal. The names and 4 digit telephone numbers are interesting. I have made quilted holders using the cathedral window design, inserted a yard stick and given as gifts so my collection is growing smaller.

I see that I am not alone in the "Mom broke a yardstick over my "heiney" group.

That is too funny. Something that used to be given out as free for advertising now costs that much. I have one that was my grandmother's and is from 1938, needless to say I don't use it. It is priceless to me, worn and stained and beautiful.

I have one just to prove to my grandkids that that was what we used and that they used to be FREE!

Our Beverly's Fabric Store still gives out wooden yard sticks. Boy, was I surprised.

Some trade show still give them out free. There was a quilt shop in Hill City, SD who gave you one everytime you visiited them before they closed their doors, plus they handed them out to one and all at the Rapid City Annual Quilt show. Ask at garage sales, I have found quite a few there for .25 or .50 each.
