I did one in various shades of pink scraps and it came out really well. There are two ways to make the French Braid - one is to use rectangles and cut off the ends when the braid is done, and the other is to use half-hexagons. I've done both, but if you're new to piecing I would choose the rectangle method so that you don't have to deal with bias edges.

i agree with above suggestion. Also, I've seen braid with one side dark/med fabs, other side lite, med lite. Go to Pinterest to see some variations/ideas.

If you cut straight grain strips and sew them together I don't see a problem with bias. Hmmm..

Some yrs ago (when they were younger) now all teenagers except 1, I got my DGDs to start making blocks. Well, oldest decided on the scrappy French Braid (she's now 16) so I'll use them in the back of her graduation quilt. As per my avatar: have made & gifted 2 oldest, GD & GS, have top & back of #2 DGS's done & soon to go to LA (it will be late, but heh). I just pray God will grant my mind & body to be able to complete all....

I have made a few, not scrappy. But I always wanted to make one out of floral fabrics that gradually change colors. Like purple going into lavender going into pinks etc. I think it would be pretty. If you make a scrappy one please post a picture for us others.

The Friendship Braid does not have the little squares in the center of the strip. http://www.favequilts.com/Throws-and...ll-Braid-Quilt

The French Braid typically has a center square that is a constant color and triangles at both ends of the braid. Free tutorial here on how to make one. http://ludlowquiltandsew.co.uk/free-...quilt-pattern/ Forgot to mention that the French Braid usually has a large center square in the center of the braid.
