I make "uneven" log cabins from my tub of strings. I just keep sewing until it's about 8" square, and then start squaring off after each round. Sometimes I'll even add two strips to one side of it needs more width. It's a great way to clean out the string bin and makes beautiful Scrappy log cabins. I DO use a consistent center square for continuity. The quilt in the picture was done by someone else but you can see the idea.

Red Garnet222-your avatar of the Bargello looks like a nice one-what is the name of your pattern?

The colors in the above quilt are beautiful. If I made quilts to sell (which I don't), I'd probably buy tools to increase my speed -- but I make quilts because I love to sew, I love to create things of beauty, and making something that I can gift to my sisters -- well, that ranks up there pretty high in my book. I just hope my sisters don't get tired of being gifted with quilts. There are lots of things I might do if my budget weren't so tight -- but we all have that to deal with to some degree! I've made three log cabin (they're mostly still quilt tops), but I'm improving as I go along, and I'm quite proud of them. I have another quilt (also a log cabin, because I've got the cut strips) in the works, but I take my time doing them.

Judy Martin says cut your strips lengthwise reather than across WOF. There is less stretch this way. This also carries over to borders, etc.

if I want exactness, I paper piece. If I want wonkey, I just sew strips and trim.

I've made several log cabin quilts and I don't see why you'd need a special ruler for it.
