Default MSQC grandmothers fan

I just watched a video on their rendition of gf.......raw edge applique of quarter circle and fan edge. In my mind it would seem those edges are too fragile that way, but I may be wrong. I still prefer raw edges to be hidden behind the fan one way or another ans same with that quarter circle. Have any of you finished a gf this way....how does it hold up to wash/wear!

I totally agree with you Geri B on the thoughts of a raw edge application. I just watched that video too and definitely would not do a raw edge. I feel the raw edge would fray too much and not really look finished. I have a dresden plate template but it is the one that you sew the top and turn and then applique to the block.

A lot of ladies at a sewing group I attend have made bulls eye quilt with raw edge circles. They seem to have held up but I don't know how often they have been washed.

I was asking the same question when i watch this. I think it will not hold up as well as other methods.

I only do raw edge on wall hangings, and needle turn for high usage quilts. Of course I would rather hand stitch than machine stitch...so that is my preference.

I agree Jane -- I only do raw edge if it is not going to be washed. I have made the Grandmother's fan block (or the 1/4 Dresden Plate) but I turned the edges under. It held up well when washed.

Lots2do-I can see where the bulls eye would hold up......it meant to be a ragged edge, that seam, if I remember, is more than 1/4" from edge.....but on this gf, Jenny is stitching right on the edge....

I'm in total agreement. I only do raw edge on art quilts. It just doesn't seem like the edges would stay down unless you just quilt the dickens out of it. Then it would be stiff.

I was thinking of doing a decorative stitch that would capture the edge and the background. If I try this it will be a decorative with a lot of stitches so I feel like it will hold together well. Your thoughts please. Thanks!
