So many great suggestions! I love the list that PetTheFabric came up with. I also suggest, especially for beginners, to mark the design on the quilt top so you can start by focusing just on making good stitches -- learning to do so without marking can always be learned later.
Also, I find that all cotton (thread, fabric, batting) is easiest. However, at a minimum, don't start with invisible thread. I thought it would be great when I did my first quilt. I had so many problems with it. Mono is SOOOO finicky!
