Default Rayon Thread for Quilting

I received a lot of rayon thread in a gift basket and want to know if it is okay to use it for piecing and quilting. I have only heard of using rayon for embroidery and cotton or cotton/poly for quilting. Any experiences to share or thoughts on this subject would be appreciated. Thanks.

Rayon thread tends to be weaker. I have used rayon when it was just the right colour to quilt a wallhanging but I wouldn't use it to quilt a regular quilt.

As Tartan said, it will break more often. You also have to be careful when pressing to only use a low setting or else you will melt the thread (I might have learned that lesson the hard way - haha!).

Other than that, provided it's not meant to be an heirloom, go for it! Quilting was born by people using the bits of fabric & threads they already had.

I wouldn't use rayon thread for piecing or quilting as it won't stand up to wear and tear the way cotton or polyester thread does.

i've heard this enough to gather up all my rayon threads and put them into a bag for Charity. I did make some Christmas quilts with lovely shiny rayon threads. oh well, i have some lovely colors of regular threads to use up..

I would never piece with it, but I have used it on utility quilts if the color is right, especially ones where I did some thread painting. I would also use on a wallhanging if I ever finish one.

Even for embroidery rayon thread was not recommended for anything that will be frequently washed or handled. Perhaps you could use it for art quilt embellishments.

It would be a shame to invest so much time & money into a quilt and lose it because of the thread.
