When our guild has work shops, we set up groups of 4 rectangle tables: 2 tables face the other 2 tables. Up the center of the 4 tables is a heavy duty power cord and a surge protector strip. The power cord does come from a wall far away as we are in a gym so we tape the cords down where possible. An announcement is made before class to please look down when you walk to be mindful of the cords.

For the fun of meeting new people in the guild have numbers drawn as where to sit. A couple of ladies didn't like this, but they changed their mind later. We are set up with 4 at two tables facing, and close to the wall. If we need more we continue across the room, and there is no cords that anybody has to step over.

Just cover the cords with a strip of duct tape. Inexpensive, narrow but wide enough and easy to pull pull.
