I think a pieced back is a fun surprise. Sometimes I have a wide strip leftover that's the full length of the back (say, for a child's quilt) or I have an extra block or two. I like to piece larger (mostly solid) fabric around them so they appear to "float" . Or an extra block makes a coordinated label.

I have never pieced a back for a quilt but now you have me interested and I think I will try that on my next quilt. I have seen one quilt that had a complete different quilt on the other side and I liked that----You get two quilts in one.

I always piece my backs. My stash is out of control and this is a good way to use it up. I use leftovers from the front.Sometimes there are a couple of wonky blocks, good place to use them. I try to make a design that is off center. My longarmer says it makes it easier if it doesn't have to be perfectly centered.

Here's one of mine. It's the one in the avatar.

The first photo is the front, the second is the back!

Back in the day quilters rarely used pieced backs (my antique collection is my reference) but I really like doing them. I think it adds a little whimsy and it's also practical.

I always use fabric on the back that I've used for the front. I try to buy extra when I buy for that quilt.

I usually use unbleached muslin, ( I like the way it feels and looks) but have used other things too. I do piece it if i don't have enough . I did this with my sons flannel quilt.. It was just a couple of width of quilt piece at top and bottom that matched the colors on the front.

I always assemble / quilt my quilts w/ a quilt as you go technique so my backs are always pieced even when they are the same (one) fabric backs.

That is a really cool quilt. Are the stripes on the back pieced? If so, how wide were they?
