I have been using polyester felt (60 inches wide) in my runners and placemats. There is no shrinkage and they FLAT forever. Wash and dry easily. Also use it for stabilizer when making purses and totes.
Also.........I use old sweatshirts for inside potholders. Less stuff going to the dumps and less money out of my pocket for batting.

A quilter friend of mine suggested to me when I made my first set to use knit fabric. I didn't want lofty placemats but I wanted some stability. I used 2 layers of knit fabric from my stash (some really ugly plaid I'd never use), heavy starch and it worked perfect. I FMQ with ease. Saved me money... I do this with table runners too.

Interesting thread! I’m making table runners right now and since I’m a longarm Quilter, I have gobs of batting scraps. I’m going to throw a bunch in my front loader on HOT, then dry on HOT...then piece together and use. I’m so glad you thought of this! Lol
I will probably use some spray adhesive to hold things in place....
