Default A Few Questions About Minky.

If you are making a seam with it, how wide do you make your seam? How wide do you sew the binding from the raw edge? Hope I made that question clear. And how wide should I make the binding itself? I just have visions of it popping out of the binding all around the quilt. Any other advice/hints will be appreciated.

Great questions. I'll be watching for the answers.

I have used minky on a few quilts for the backing and never had problems with the binding. I did my binding for those quilts the same as other quilts...sewed on 1/4" from edge and I have not had problems.

I am interested in the seam question as well. I have a quilt that I will be starting that I will need to piece the minky for the backing and so I was wondering the same thing

I make my seams about 1/2". I open the seams rather than pressing them to one side & use the iron on 1/4" double sided interfacing to hold the edges of the Minky flat. Minky tends to curl at the seams.
I bind as I would any other quilt.

I usually just use Minky as a backing and I add the binding as I do other quilts. I did make a quilt with scraps of left over minky and did sew more than a 1/4 but less than 1/2. Made the backing with scraps of flannel and just serged the edges. Gave it to my DD and she used it as a rug in her bedroom. She loves it said that she would not have thought of it if I had not suggested it.

I use a little wider seam for Piecing Minky, between 3/8 & 1/2, depending on the type of Minky ( some are heavier than others- some are double sided, some single.
I bind like any other quilt. If it’s a heavy— thick quilt ( like flannel, lofty batting plus Minky ) I use a bit wider seam to machine stitch the one binding side. I also ( if the Minky is on the back) sew the binding on the back & fold to front to hand stitch. If you are machine stitching both sides it wouldn’t matter

I have done 1 with minky backing. I used about 3/8 inch seam for the binding, machine sewn on the back. I used a 2 1/2 strip for binding folded in half (same as all of my other quilts. I did machine sew on the front too.
