I was gong to hang a bigger balance wheel on a 15 I was converting to treadle. I thought the larger diameter 6 spoke wheel might be a better idea. Err no, the hub was wider and I couldn't get the clutch knob on at all. Just thought I'd share one bit of learning. Big wheel was off a 66 Small one was off a 99.

I have come across related info regarding this. Hand crank 99s doesn't always have the same hand wheel or hand crank as other models. I'm not sure of the details, but I guess it's related to early or later productions and machine size (case size?). My 1950 201K looks like it has the same hand wheel as your 99 does, sort of nine spokes in the wheel.

Do they have parts numbers? Industrial treadles have large hand wheels, and the older models like 15 and 27 can have very heavy thick hand wheels. I'm not sure about early model 66s, the early production after 1900.

I have heard of differences and have noted balance wheels in parts lists with a couple different size pulleys. It appears according to http://vssmb.blogspot.com/2011/07/lo...andwheels.html that one may have to switch out the bushing as they both fit on the same shaft. I don't know if Rain ever did a tutorial on removing the bushing. Fortunately, for me, I have a brother that has the tools and know-how to do it. He recently removed the broken bushing from my Junker & Ruh and repaired it so that it works.

Wheels aren't near me right now. May have to wait a couple weeks for parts #s. And Yes, Janey, the pulley sizes were different also.

Some Singers (ISTR Nos. 15 and 66) have a deeper hub - the sleeve that fits between the balance wheel and the main shaft is longer too, swapping that should let you fit the deeper wheel.

Sorry for resurrecting the thread, but through a google search for wheel differences, this popped up. And you know, since I just joined and all, I like to make an entrance.

This guy "modified" his 66 for heavy(er) duty stitching, and stated he placed a "thicker" balance wheel on it to give him more torque. But then he dropped the ball and failed to mention WHICH wheel it was.

Anyone have a clue as to what he possibly could have done?

I was just looking at that link. While it gives the diameter's, I didn't see any thickness measurements.

Joe Jr. That was an impressive list. Something it does not include is the thickness of the hub. I've run into issues there, but not lately.
