This is the quilt I made last year in my Grandson's college colors It is called Argyle. I cannot remember where I got the pattern. Sorry I don't have a better picture but you get the idea. It ismasculine looking which is what I wanted.

When my nephew was graduating high school and getting ready to go off to college, I made him a quilt for his dorm. He likes blues and greens (very calming colors) so I did a snail's trail in those colors for him. He loved it. He told me it kept his bones warm at night--LOL (He is a very thin young man and he was going to a slightly cooler climate than his Central Texas home and I didn't want him to be cold)

I'm sure your grandson will appreciate a quilt made by you but I do have concern for the use this quilt will receive and with the time and love you will put into a quilt. I would not be so concerned about a quilt that will fit his bed. Dorm beds become something to sit on, study on, eat snacks, etc etc. They get pretty rough use

Donna Jordan of Jordan Fabrics in Grants Pass, Oregon, has a great video on putting together a Jelly Roll Drag Race quilt. Just pick his favorite colors in a jelly roll and an accent fabric and make an awesome quilt.

Thought I'd share a picture of one I made years ago that has held up to regular use and washing. It was a lot of work, however, and I had to buy special snips to cut the fringes or would have given up early on. The squares can be bigger, or you can do it in strips or rectangles instead of squares. I made a small one earlier using calico fabrics with denim and cut batting squares for it. These are very heavy quilts for their size.
