Me? I'm one of the love-line-dryers .... and I miss it so much, for all things, not just towels!

Agree with the others ... line dry and then dryer/fluff if you want to soften them down.
Though if you have a good breeze while line drying, it will soften them up some too.

However, do you suppose?? ......
if you let the borrowers have a little roughness, maybe just maybe they will bring their own?

Just might be a good strategy!

I am 73 and remember hanging clothes outside, my Mom did too. I always hated it because it took all day to wash and wait for the clothes to line dry. We enlarged our utility room, I got washer,dryer set. No more line drying for me.

My towels and everything else is washed in cold and cold water tide, dried in dryer. Not rough.

If you use too much detergent it will make towels stiff. Nothing feels better than a soft towel.

I use my clothes line for most everything except underwear, night gowns and most perma-press. With all, they do dry stiffer because they are not being tumbled and beat into submission! If you want fluffy, give them a spin in the dryer (cool heat) for a short time.

I don't mind rough towels either. I love to line dry when I can. It's one of the few household chores I like haha.

If I do not use my dryer for the whole load, I throw a slightly damp hand towel in the dryer to "fluff" the clothes. That seems to soften the items I am drying.

To be clear - I do not like my towels extremely stiff and/or rough - but line dried on a windy day - just about perfect.

My husband is retired so he mostly does the laundry. I will sneak in & wash clothes once in a while so I can hang them out on the line. He says that he doesn't like them hung out because they are stiff but I just tell him that when he puts his undies on they melt into softness in just a few seconds & I get the eye roll. I love that look.

And if the guests get 'rough' towels, maybe they will remember to bring their own next time LOL

I love the process of washing laundry and hanging outside on a pulley clothesline and seeing the laundry dance in the breeze. Everything smells so fresh and clean. It brings back memories of a slower paced time when my mother and grandmother hung out laundry.

Dry them on the line, then fluff them in the dryer.
