They always put mine flat on the bottom of a box and filled it with my fabric. Never had any damage with them packed that way and we moved many times.

I bought an 18”x18”x18” moving box ~ I left the box flat and slid my mats inside and taped the ends of the box.

If you're using mattress boxes, perhaps sealing your boards in between 2 heavy pieces of cardboard and putting them in with the mattresses? Should work.

I too put mine in with large frames. I bought large narrow boxes from U-Haul that are for pictures and mirrors. After I wrapped the pictures with blankets there was still a little bit of movement in the box so I just filled the box with fabric (on the side opposite the mats so that they stayed flat) until nothing moved in any direction. (You've got to put all that valuable fabric somewhere when you move!)
