Invite grandpa to come and help. He might learn something as well. At the very least he can help!

It's so great of you to do this. However, the jelly roll race is a very boring pattern to sew... especially for beginners. Endless long seams. I'd go with something more fun that incorporates lots of color. You could cut those jelly rolls up and make some strip pieced blocks, or rail fence blocks. There are lots of fun patterns for strips.

Pillow cases, pj bottoms paired with a t-shirt, a simple lap quilt with charm packs, I can think of a lot of fun, easy projects instead of long boring seams. Tying the lap quilt is more forgiving than quilting. Kids are not consistent with seam allowance, and you do not want to correct or tell them they are doing it wrong. Joanne has some simple kids quilt kits that have all the needed fabrics. You can check into those. Perhaps a fleece blanket.

Well done. and very good thinking about using Joann's craft room. You'll have a really good time. I'm teaching my now 8 yr old neighbor girl, once a week (since last Oct) and we're having a grand time. She's just the grand daughter I needed in my old person life.

WOW, this is a great idea too. I keep telling folks at my very large guild that we need to do a HANDS-ON community project. Set up our machines, invite folks to bring their young girls, and learn to sew.

You will be making memories for those girls, and maybe setting them off on a lifetime of creativity.

I'm just curious about JoAnn's because when I was at the cutting table recently someone came up and asked if the store had sewing machines available for rent or to use in the store, and the answer was not at this store. Is that something that many of them do?
