I guess I just couldn’t leave that apple ribbon on the Joy block. 
I liked the idea of having something that reminds me of the month Joy was made, but...it just didn’t look right. So I went back and changed it to a basket of apples. I’m new to applique and just sort of trying things out. Can someone tell me how to avoid the puckers?

Beverly...that turned out so cute...love the basket of apples. So fun.... I assume your applique is raw-edge and satin stitched on. I do turned edge so I don't, typically, have a pucker issue. Since Joy is a pieced applique, you may have had puckers because she wasn't flat to begin with. If so, maybe just starch applique piece to achieve a flatter piece...and you can try basting with a bit of glue near (but not on) edges to give more flat edge before you do satin stitch. Using a light weight stabilizer may help and using a smaller size needle also. One last suggestion would be to loosen the pressure on your presser foot. It may be too tight against the fabric when you lower it. You just need to play and use different techniques until you find one that works for you. Maybe someone who does raw edge can offer more suggestions. Otherwise....welcome to the world of applique...the happiest place on earth..at least for me. Lol.

Beverly: love your Joy Pig and the apple basket! Great Idea. I have found that to avoid puckers in machine applique is to use a stabilizer on the back. I also machine embroider so I have tear away stabilizer that I use on the back of anything I machine applique that does not have batting or backing on it. I just use scraps that fit where the applique is and then tear it off. Also, using an applique stitch instead of satin stitch will help with puckers.

pbadder love your addition of the barn. BlueridgeBeverly I agree with Murphy try using a stablizer on the back of your block. I use a thin knit iron on that I get at JoAnn's. You can use a satin stitch then. Your block is really cute.

It is an adorable block....either of the 2 will be so cute. I have ideas swirling in my head for this pattern and my quilt layout..
Jane....I went to the "kit" to read descriptions because I was confused, too. You can choose between one of the two blocks for the quilt. The big or the mini....your choice. That is my understanding..
