Default Cotton Duck Cloth or Cotton Canvas for Rug

I'm thinking about making the rectangular jelly roll rug and using only one fabric. I found a 60" wide, medium weight cotton canvas on line that I really like.

Is there any reason why cotton duck or cotton canvas would be inappropriate?

It all depends on if your sewing machine can handle a thicker fabric.

It might last longer.

That fabric would make a beautiful rug.

You may want to cut your strips on a bias for those fabrics. It will make the fabric much easier to bend around corners

that's a thicker fabric and may be harder to manage.

Try a small piece and see how it works with your machine. Also, step on it and see if it scratches your bare foot. It may be uncomfortable. Just a suggestion.

I know from videos I've watched that sometimes the rugs don't lay flat, even the soft cotton ones if not handled properly-not sure how the canvas would work since its less flexible. (Lots of hints on line about how to make your rug lay flat-maybe the rectangle ulnar ones don't have as much of a problem with that.) Haven't started yet-I'm nervous! Not a cheap project since I don't want to cut and tape all my own batting strips.
