Your pig is exactly what I am trying to learn to do well! Pretty sure I have that stitch, so I can check off one of my questions. Lol So naturally I still need to ask a question about the newsprint in order to make sure I understand......I can put a piece of paper ( would copy paper work? ) under my block while sewing, tear it away when done, and achieve that effect? No extra layers to cut away or leave and weight my block down!

Sorry, didn't see your question until today. Newsprint is just a thin fairly inexpensive paper that you can get in a tablet like copy paper. I like it better than copy paper because it is thinner and easier to rip away without distorting your stitches.
