Is there a tutorial how to separate a zipper and reattach the pull?

I too bought the Sweet Pea pattern and quite by accident, the first ones worked perfectly and then had problems, finally figured out it was the zipper. The YKK works for me every time. Not so much some of the other brands.

After cutting off tabs, keep pull on one side of zipper. Then on the other side you want to attach you MUST cut off 1//2 inch of TEETH only. This lets you slide tab on. Try to keep zipper sides even when doing this. If you didn't you can cut off to make even at the top before applying stops.

I'm bringing this thread back to life because I am having problems with this zipper technique. I can reattach the zipper pull, but when I'm using just one side of the zipper it does not close smoothly. The coils look 'bumpy'. If I reattach the pull to the original two sides of the zipper everything works well.
I bought my zipper at a craft resale shop. It is new, but older. It originally sold for 70 cents. It's a nylon coil. A previous poster thought that might be a problem.
What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks.
