I am in the 2.25 inch group and I almost always do bias bindings. I keep my scraps for scrappy bindings. I am intrigued by the comment about cutting 3 inch bindings and the need to plan for that during construction and trimming to square quilt. I am going to have to try that.

I just cut a 3 inch binding the other day...folded it in half. My mitered corners came out perfect. That was a first on the mitered corners turning out so good, so I don't know if the extra width had anything to do with it or not. I normally cut my binding at 2 1/2 inches. I like the look of the binding, so I may cut more at 3 inches.

I also cut 2.5” strips, miter when I join them, fold in half, stitch to the front with a full 1/4”. Fold to the back and hand stitch. The only time I do something different is for flannel quilts. Those I use a very wide border so the end result is 1” wide on the top instead of the narrow 1/4”. I don’t mind the hand quilting. I use those fun little plastic clips to hold he binding in place and settle in with a good movie on the TV.

Wow Jordan, I never thought of that. I'm going in my sewing room right now and cut 2 1/2" squares from all my left over bindings. I'll be all set for a great new scrappy!

I always cut mine at 2.5". If I have a scalloped-edge quilt I cut the strips on the diagonal. I like to use black&white striped fabric because it seems to set off colorful quilts, but if I have a pastel quilt then I use a coordinating fabric. For baby quilts I machine sew both the front and the back, but I much prefer the relaxation of hand-sewing and often do it for fellow quilters.

I've cut mine anywhere from 2" to 2.5". I guess I prefer not to have so much on the back so I use the smaller width; works for me. Good luck.

I make my binding with 2 1/2" strips. I rarely hand sew anymore since I don't know where they are going. I want them to be able to last through kids dragging it around, making tents, picnics etc.

I also make my binding 2 1/2" and I usually make more than I need so I have enough left over to bind another project.
