Default Binding cheat

So you have looked a long time for a 2 and 1/4 double fold binding but nothing looks as perfect as the fabric that you have very little of. Solution ...cut strips of the binding you want at 1 and 1/2 inches and scrap fabric 1 and 1/4 inches.

Sew them together with 1/4 inch seam to make your 2 and 1/4 inch binding and iron the seam allowance to the scrap fabric. The extra seam will be inside of the binding on the back and you can sew the binding on the front and hand stitch to the back. It will be a little fuller in the binding in the back but if no other binding fabric will do, it will work.

Thanks! I could have used this tip when doing the last baby quilt...I managed with a 2" binding but it wasn't fun pinching/holding it all together while I hand stitched it.

I believe I have seen this referred to as "Flange Binding".

Great idea! Thanks for posting this. I ran into this problem in the past and ended up rummaging thru my stash to find a substitute fabric... not quite as good for the quilt, but at least it was finished. I'm making a note of your suggestion!

It could be if the scrap fabric was sewn so it showed on the top. But Tartan is using the other fabric for her 'good' side and the scrap is just extending the width of the fabric,.

Thank you Tartan for posting the binding cheat. I am facing this challenge right now.

I want my binding to be 2 and 1/2 in. double fold. Would it be correct to cut the binding I want at 1 and 3/4 inches?
and the scrap fabric 1 and 1/4 inches? Thank you again!
