For not being quilt worthy, I'd say he won the jackpot. He must have won the jackpot in the sister category too.

To my knowledge, that pattern has been around for years. I believe the name refers to a period in our history of expanding America's boundaries and the numbers refer to a certain parallel.

Love the contrast and the 9-patches! Gives such a nice curved effect.

Cat-on-a-mac, Tennessee Waltz is what Judy Martin called it combining the 54-40 or Fight block with a Snowball and so it was popularized under that name.

54-40 or Fight was a slogan from the era of president James Polk (1850s). It was about the dividing line between Canada and the US, although that was settled on at the 49th parallel, which was the Oregon Territories (including the northern border of now Washington State.

Edit: Living here in Seattle, I'm also familiar with the Pig War which so far as I know, has no blocks!

And then there was Seward's Folly/President Lincoln's purchase of Alaska.

This quilt is strikingly beautiful and you did a great job with the color placements. LOVE it....great quilt for a guy, even a non-quiltworthy guy.

I love that pattern. Your quilt is pretty darn beautiful for someone not really quilt worthy though!
