Since I need to trim HST’s anyway I sew them, I’ve been cutting squares in half diagonally and sewing the halves together. Then I don’t need to draw any lines at all.

for no lines and precision triangles, check out the EZ triangle rulers.
search amazon or google using "EZ triangle rulers".
they are less expensive than most, easy to use, and give great results.
i do have a few other brands but keep going back to the EZs for most things.

unless my ruler or cutter slips, or unless i get carried away when pressing, i rarely need to trim for size.

I lay two square RST, then fold the top one on the diagnonal to form a slight crease. That's my line that I sew 1/4" to the right of. I only crease the top one because folding two at the same time results in less accuracy. And besides, you only see the top piece anyway.

Sometimes I do the drawing and bisecting.

Here's a video that shows several different ways of making HSTs. And there's no talking, just written words and diagrams. Easy peasy.

Barb in Louisiana - they make a template to trim the HST to size - has the slits for trimming the dog ears off; I think the gal showed it in making the accordion type hst on youtube.

I use a cheapo laser pointer ...I put sticky velcro on it, and the other half of the sticky velcro on the machine ..once you get it lined up where you want to stitch, put the 2 pieces together, and off you go..
