What do those of you who enter quilt shows use on the back of the quilt. I'm considering entering the Bloomington, IN quilt show next year. One of the rules is "contain some quilting that can be seen from the back." It doesn't say how much quilting. I always use a print fabric as my backing which wouldn't work, but do you think a tone on tone be OK. I don't want to use muslin. I find that boring. And are pieced backings acceptable? This is a non-juried show, so all entries which follow the rules are accepted; prizes and ribbons are awarded.

I think in this case that the "seen from the back" doesn't mean to not use prints. Heck, I have busy scrap quilts where you can't really see the quilting front or back. I think it would mean something that is detail quilted, like blocks on the front, where the quilting doesn't go through all three layers.

If you like pieced backs, you can always put in a piece of something plain and if you really wanted it to show you could put in a different bobbin thread when working in that area.

Best thing to do is to ask.

I think they are referring to is , quilting the whole quilt and then put a new back on to cover the mess, ( puckers/ thread ends)

IMHO ... this is one that you might be best to check for clarification/definition.
Definitely not one to assume what they are meaning.

It may be that these rules are meant to also cover art quilts, which sometimes will have false backs on them. In this case, they are not allowing false backs on art quilts. For example, the quilt in my avatar would not be allowed in that show. A print on a quilt backing would be fine, but good to check.

I agree with Tartan and Watson. I just think your show organizers didn't word it very succinctly.

Portland's big quilt show has it worded thusly: "Quilts must consist of three layers, with stitching through all three layers and stitching visible on both sides."

As others have said, ask for clarification to be sure.

I agree with Tartan and Watson--no false backs. But definitely check to make sure as that isn't well worded.

Yesterday I asked about the backing for a show quilt. Several people suggested that I should ask the organization holding the show (duh, me), so I did. Those who said it probably meant no false backs were correct. I can use whatever backing fabric I want (including prints), just don't cover it up.
