I have a chance to buy a used (very little use) Bernina serger for a good price, but do I really need it is my question to myself. I was wondering if any one has one and how often do you use it with quilting projects and what do you use it for when quilting? Thanks! All information is greatly appreciated. Happy Quilting!!!

The only quilting thing I've ever used my serger for is sewing the layers of pillow shams together.

Kay Wood has a video out of a 6 hour quilt using a serger. Have not done this but it is on my bucket list!!!

I rarely use my serger for quilting projects but it is invaluable to me for apparel sewing. I sew for my granddaughters (5 of them) and use it for regular construction as it sews and finishes the seam with one process. It is also great for sewing knits.

I made a small ‘tester’ quilt following Kay Wood’s idea just to see what it was like. The quilt went together very quickly - if I remember rightly Kay say something in her video about using this method for a group of people to make charity quilts.

It is a good way to use up wide strips of fabric and wadding.

I did not like the fact that the seams were bulky - 2 layers of wadding and 6 layers of fabric.

The quilt edge was serged before binding and it made the binding process easier.

I second pewa88's reply. I love it for sewing garments, especially knits. It doesn't appeal to me at all for sewing quilts.

I have 2 sergers and the only thing I use them on a regular basis for surging fleece.

When I was making garments, I would not be without a serger, but I have never used one for quilting.

I serger the cut ends of large pieces of fabrics that I machine wash. Add me to the list who love sergers for sewing garments.

I have an "vintage" serger, that probably has a million miles on it, serviced once, never had any problems, I don't really use it in quilting, but there's no way I'd get rid of it.
