Here's a clever tip for sewing corners
This tip applies to sewing clothes, placemats or for quilting with
walking foot. I know there was a discussion a while ago about sewing
corners but I'm not sure anyone came up with a good solution. I found
a tip a few days ago on a blog. Sorry, can't remember where but if I
find it I will post it. Anyway, I tried it and it works perfectly.
You know when you turn and it misses a stitch?
Well, here's the easy fix. When you make that last stitch
before turning, put your needle down only half way or less,
turn your fabric then complete your stitch. I was so
happy to try this and it worked. Now I have square corners
instead of rounded ones. Yipee.

Then I started using a very short stitch at every corner but that gets pretty tiring.

Another garment sewing trick for very square corners...stop stitching about 2 stitches from actual corner. Sew those 2 stitches diagonally then pivot and continue sewing your next seam. Clip the extra fabric from the diagonal and your corners will be much more square.

I think I got this tip from Sewing with Nancy, but I just stitch off the corner,don't cut the thread, lift the foot, turn fabric and start again at the other side. I don't turn with needle down, just had too many problems with that method especially with those 1/4 seams.. Most of those corners get trimmed anyway, so for me a win win.
