I have done a baby size Turning Twenty from the 1st book. Then add 1-2 borders& it is a nice size.

Claudette by Villa Rosa designs uses 8 fat quarters plus background yardage and makes a nice size lap quilt. It is also beginner friendly

What about churn dash pattern or turning twenty pattern? Although you may have to buy more fabric!!!

There are many throw size quilts you could make with the addition on some plain white background fabric. You could even use a white sheet and cut it up.

Another suggestion that I have come to love is making pretty pouches, totes, and now purses. I started with pouches, and gradually worked my way up. I love them, because they make such cute gifts, and everyone loves them. Look on YouTube. That is how I learned. You can quilt them if you like, but it is not necessary. I have another pattern that is for 8 FQ. Crazy Eights by Bits 'n Pieces. It is 38 x 45 but add borders it's a nice size.
