Hearts are love! I have two sons, and I have quilted hearts on their quilts, draw them on their cards, and made them heart shaped cakes and cookies. When they both lived at home, and I was working, I often left for work before they did. After a heavy snow I would draw big hearts on their windshields as I went by their cars. Heart are gender neutral!

Special care needs special love. Babies are love. Hearts are love. Quilts are love. Color is love. I think it's wonderful.
Perspective: maybe her comment reflects her belief system. Love isn't gender specific. Love is love. Maybe she needs some extra.

Don't worry about the hearts, those special babies are loved and the hearts send the message. There is plenty of time for trucks, airplanes and super heroes after these little bitty ones grow up a little. I am a grandma to two preemies and honestly, IMHO everyone will go a awwww and return their focus to the battles and successes these babies are experiencing.

I have two adolescent boys in our family and they both love hearts, one of them wears purple "it's the color of royalty" he tells me.
