Yeah, I think you guys are right that they're nothing to do with the machine. I wonder what ever happened to whatever they unlocked? I put them back in the inkwell for the time being.

Well, a day or so of oil soaking in and it runs great without taking the motor apart.

But the grime on it was apparently a layer of nicotine! Removing it started making a real mess. So, I swapped in another of my 201-2s and set this one aside for a gloves-on cleanup, when I feel inspired. It's still going to be a fantastic machine.
