Check out quilt as you go. After you quilt the main part of the quilt, make your borders and quilt them (make sure you leave extra backing and batting, (same with your main quilt) Then add the quilted borders to your already quilted piece. It is done basically the same as a Quilt As You Go In Sectons. And added note: do not quilt to the very edge of your top and your border edge. You need at least the seam allowance to add the border to the top, myself, I leave 3/4 of an inch to give me extra.

I have seen this done before and is certainly an option. I have a five foot frame on my long arm due to size restrictions of my area, but I still use it to do king size quilts. I baste everything together, load it on, do one corner, flip it and do each of the other corners. If needed I will finagle some clips to position it for the middle section to be done as well. It's a pain, but it works.
