Default I have a question about rulers

Both my daughter and myself are wondering if there is a definitive answer as to which side of the lines on the rulers do you put the fabric to cut. It is frustrating because some of the rulers have fat lines and some thin lines. Some have fat lines on even inches and thin on half inch marks. How do all of you do it?
Thanks
Lynda

I do try and put the line fully on the fabric. "quiltville.blogspot.com/2012/02/making-cut.html" This link is to a tip from Bonnie Hunter's quiltville site on using rotary cutters and rulers. I have found it to be helpful. It is a bit long to read but gives some good hints and explanations.

Definitely get the whole line up on the edge of the fabric... otherwise your pieces will be too small.

I put the whole line on top of the fabric. Some lines are wide so it does make a difference. Sometimes I have to turn the fabric to the backside so I can see the ruler line.

I find the best way, is to use the same brand of ruler throughout a quilt top. No matter where you put the line( I put it on the fabric) the top will turn out. Unless your blocks need to be a specific size for a block exchange, you will be fine.

I found that when I set the line right on top of the edge, my blocks were a shade too small, so now I try to see a thread or two of fabric to the left of the line before cutting. I think it's really up to you.

I paid attention yesterday as I cut 1.25" strips. I have a 2" by 18" ruler marked in 1/8" increments. I line up the center line on my ruler to the correct line (essentially 1" away).
