Domestic sewing machine???
Hi folks, great site you have here. I am just a beginner, looking to sew some canvas for a boat. Just picked up a Domestic model 5438 at a Habitat for Humanity Restore, after cleaning, oiling, and a new belt, it seems to work great. Tried to upload a pic, but it won't work..... Can anyone tell me about what year this was made? Since it is all metal and made in Japan, my guess is the 60's.
Thanks,
Rich

Welcome & Howdy from Texas. It might be hard to identify your machine without a picture. Does it have a serial #? Your picture might be to large to post as there is a limit to the size you can post. Maybe try decreasing the size of picture before trying to upload it. Looking forward to seeing what you do in the future with your new hobby.

Most likely this is a badged machine, I know White had the name for some time, but don't know if they sold it to someone else. If it's as new as the 60's, it's almost certain to be a Japanese made machine.

I can't help with the date. If you need a manual - http://www.singerco.com/uploads/down...ite-5438-x.pdf

Domestic
Domestic produced their first machine in 1864. White bought Domestic in 1934. Domestic continued to produce machines for White as well as for themselves as a subsidiary of White until the end of the depression when sadly they shut down for good.

According to fiddlebase.com - Domestic came about in 1869 and was a subsidiary of White from 1924-1930s. The machine pictured is a Japanese badged machine.
